How can I get from NYC to Six Flags Great Adventure ROUNDTRIP semi-cheaply?

I am trying to get round trip from NYC to Six Flags Great adventure in Jackson, NJ. Any suggestions. So far I have: rent a car, take the port authority bus (but the schedule confuses me), pay someone to drive me (very expensive), taxi (not really an option haha) Thanks guys!
